If you’ve spent years thinking your chance to straighten your teeth has passed, we’ve got good news – it hasn’t. More adults than ever are choosing to start orthodontic treatment, whatever stage of life they’re at, and it’s rarely too late to get the smile you’ve always wanted.
Teeth can move at any age, as long as your gums and the bone supporting your teeth are healthy. The biological process our orthodontists rely on to move teeth works the same way whether you’re 16 or 60.
That’s not to say every case is identical. Adults sometimes have other dental work to consider first, and we’ll take that into account as part of your treatment plan. But in the vast majority of cases, age itself isn’t what determines whether braces are possible.
Before starting treatment, we’ll check the health of your teeth as well as your gums and the bone supporting them, since these can be affected by your age or previous dental history. If anything needs addressing first, such as gum health or a filling, we’ll talk you through that at your consultation – we can refer you back to your own dentist, or book you in with our own dentist, Dr Neva Patel.
Beyond that, the process is much the same. Treatment times vary from person to person rather than by age, and many adults find their treatment takes a similar amount of time to a teenager with a comparable case. If your teeth show signs of wear, which is common in adults, composite bonding can help refine them once treatment is complete.
There are more discreet options available now than ever before, from clear aligners like Angel Aligners and Invisalign to ceramic braces, which has made treatment much more appealing for adults who want to straighten their teeth without it being obvious.
For a lot of people, it’s also about timing. Careers settle, family life becomes more established, and there’s finally space to prioritise something they’ve wanted for years.
We also see plenty of parents who start their own treatment after watching their children go through braces or aligners with us. Seeing the process up close, and the confidence their child gains from it, is often what prompts them to finally do the same for themselves.
