What if my child doesn’t qualify for NHS braces?

Finding out your child doesn’t qualify for NHS orthodontic care can be disappointing. Many parents assume braces are automatically available, only to discover that treatment is offered only when strict criteria are met – and even then, waiting lists can be long.

Why some children don’t qualify for NHS braces

NHS orthodontic treatment is offered to children under 18 based on a clinical scoring system called the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN). Even if teeth look crooked, treatment may not be available if the score doesn’t meet the NHS threshold.

Waiting times can also be lengthy, with some children waiting years before treatment begins. At Ewell Orthodontics, we only provide private orthodontic care, which means there are no NHS assessments or waiting lists to navigate.

If NHS treatment isn’t an option, it helps to know that you still have choices. Understanding those options can make it easier to decide what’s right for your child’s smile and confidence.

Option 1: Choosing not to have treatment

Some families choose not to go ahead with orthodontic treatment, at least for now. This can feel like the simplest option in the short term.

However, it’s worth remembering that orthodontic issues rarely improve on their own. Crooked or crowded teeth can make cleaning more difficult, which may increase the risk of decay or gum problems. For many teenagers, the way their teeth look can also affect their confidence in everyday life.

A specialist orthodontist can help you understand the best timing for treatment, based on your child’s individual needs.

Option 2: Private orthodontic treatment

Private orthodontic care gives families greater flexibility and choice, including the option to start treatment when it suits you. At Ewell Orthodontics, your child’s care is led by a specialist orthodontist at every appointment, with more time to personalise treatment around their needs. Your child can choose from a range of discreet options, including clear or champagne-coloured fixed braces and Angel Aligners. Private care also allows for a more personalised approach, clearer timelines and flexible payment options to help spread the cost.

Option 3: Essentials – specialist care at an affordable price

We understand that cost can be a concern when NHS treatment isn’t available. To help bridge that gap, we’ve introduced our Essentials package, a more affordable private orthodontic option for under 18s.

Essentials includes upper and lower champagne-coloured braces, all routine scans and X-rays, appointments with a specialist orthodontist, one set of removable retainers and 12 months of aftercare, all at a clear, fixed price. Appointments take place during the school day, which helps keep costs lower while maintaining the same high standard of care.

The Essentials package offers a straightforward and accessible route to private orthodontic treatment.

Finding the right option for your child

Every child is different, and there’s no single right answer. Whether you decide to wait, explore private treatment or choose our Essentials package, the most important thing is having clear, honest information.

A free consultation with a specialist orthodontist can help you understand your child’s options and feel confident about the next step, whatever you decide.
