Clear aligners are a popular (and excellent!) choice for straightening teeth, but they’re not the only one. We always make sure our patients know about every option available to them, including ceramic braces.

At Ewell Orthodontics, we offer clear ceramic fixed braces by Clarity™, alongside our champagne-coloured Iconix braces, Angel Aligners and Invisalign. This guide explains what ceramic braces are and how to know if they’re the right choice for you.

What are ceramic braces?

Ceramic braces work in exactly the same way as metal braces – brackets are attached to your teeth and connected with a wire, which is adjusted over time to gradually guide your teeth into position.

The difference is the material. Instead of metal, the brackets are made from a translucent, tooth-coloured ceramic that blends in much more naturally with your teeth. Our Clarity™ brackets are also designed to be small and low-profile, which helps with comfort as well as appearance.

Ceramic versus metal braces

The main appeal of ceramic braces is how discreet they are. From a short distance or in photos, they’re far less noticeable than traditional metal brackets, which makes them a popular choice for anyone who feels self-conscious about the look of braces.

Beyond appearance, ceramic braces work just as effectively as metal ones. Treatment times and results are comparable, so you’re not compromising on outcome for the sake of a more subtle appearance.

Choosing between ceramic braces and aligners

Ceramic braces and clear aligners both offer a more discreet alternative to metal, but there are some key differences to consider.

Because ceramic braces are fixed to your teeth, there’s no compliance required – you can’t forget to wear them, and there’s no discipline needed around hours of wear per day. This can make them a good option if you know you’d struggle with the routine that aligners require. Fixed braces can also treat more complex cases than aligners are sometimes able to, so your orthodontist may recommend ceramic braces to give you the best result.
