Do braces affect your speech?

If you’re thinking about getting braces – or your child is – you might be wondering if they’ll affect the way you speak. It’s a common concern, especially if you use your voice a lot at work, school or socially. The good news is: any changes are usually temporary, and most people adjust quickly.

Here’s what to expect – and how we can help you feel confident every step of the way.

Why speech changes can happen

Braces sit close to the lips, cheeks and tongue, which all play a role in forming sounds. When your mouth is adjusting to something new – whether it’s fixed braces or clear aligners – it’s normal to notice slight differences in how you speak at first.

Some people experience:

  • A mild lisp, particularly with “s” or “sh” sounds
  • Slight mumbling or slurring
  • Feeling self-conscious while adjusting

These changes are typically short-lived and improve within a few days to a couple of weeks as your mouth gets used to the braces.

Fixed braces vs clear aligners

Fixed braces are attached to your teeth and may feel a bit bulky at first, which can affect your speech more noticeably during the initial adjustment period. Once you adapt, most people speak just as clearly as before.

Clear aligners like Angel Aligners or Invisalign are custom-moulded to your teeth and very thin, so speech changes tend to be minimal. If you do notice a slight lisp at first, it usually fades as you get used to wearing them.

Tips for adapting quickly

  • Practice speaking out loud – reading aloud or chatting with friends and family helps you adjust faster
  • Stay consistent – the more you wear your aligners or speak with your braces in, the quicker your speech will normalise
  • Be patient – your muscles and mouth just need a little time to adapt
  • Ask us for advice – if you’re concerned, we’re always here to help with tips and reassurance

Long-term speech benefits

In some cases, orthodontic treatment can actually improve your speech. If your bite or tooth position is affecting the way certain sounds are formed, straightening your teeth may lead to clearer pronunciation in the long run.
