Many parents are surprised to hear that we like to see children from around the age of 9. By this stage, the adult teeth and jaws are developing quickly, and a gentle assessment can help us make sure everything is on track.
Sometimes it’s just a friendly visit to say hello and keep an eye on things. Other times, we might spot something that’s easier – and more comfortable – to treat at a younger age.
Here are some signs your child could benefit from an earlier consultation.
If your child is 9–10 and still has baby teeth that aren’t making way for adult teeth, we can check whether everything is developing as it should. An OPG X-ray gives us a full view of the teeth, including those still under the gums, and helps us spot if upper canines are heading off course – something we can often guide back into place if we catch it early.
A large overjet – sometimes called “buck teeth” – can be more than just a cosmetic concern. It can increase the risk of injury and affect how the bite develops. Starting functional appliance treatment with clear aligners from around age 10 has worked brilliantly for many of our young patients.
If your child’s top teeth bite inside the bottom teeth, particularly on just one side, it can cause uneven jaw growth over time. The earlier we address this, the easier it is to correct.
A narrow upper jaw can affect both bite and breathing. If your child often breathes through their mouth, we may be able to widen the upper arch to improve their bite, create space for adult teeth and even help prevent future snoring.
If this habit continues beyond the early years, it can push the upper front teeth forwards and affect the way the jaws grow, sometimes making future orthodontic treatment more complex.
Our specialist orthodontists, Dr Faiza Lewis and Dr Richard Williams, have over 40 years of combined experience creating healthy, confident smiles for children, teens and adults. Because we only offer orthodontic treatment, every appointment is focused on achieving the best results in the most comfortable and efficient way possible. You’ll also see the same orthodontist throughout your child’s journey, so you can feel confident they’re in expert hands from start to finish.
Not every child we see at 9 needs treatment right away – sometimes, we just keep an eye on things and wait for the right time. But if we do find something that would benefit from early attention, acting sooner can mean shorter treatment times and better long-term results.
