Starting orthodontic treatment is a big step, and it’s completely natural to wonder what it’ll feel like. Most people have heard that braces can be uncomfortable – but the reality is usually much more manageable than you might expect.
Here’s an honest guide to what you can expect, from the day your braces go on to the moment they come off.
When you leave the practice after your first appointment, your mouth will feel a little different. The brackets and wires are new additions, and it can take a few days to stop noticing them. Your lips and cheeks may feel a bit tender as they adjust to the hardware – this is completely normal and settles down quickly.
The same is true for clear aligners like Invisalign or Angel Aligners. Each new set applies gentle pressure to move your teeth, and you might feel some tightness for a day or two when you switch to a fresh aligner. Most patients find this eases off quickly and becomes very familiar as treatment progresses.
The tenderness you feel is actually a sign that treatment is working. When an orthodontic wire or aligner applies pressure to a tooth, the bone around the root slowly adapts to allow movement. That pressure – and the biological response to it – is what causes the mild ache you might notice.
With fixed braces, you may feel some discomfort after each adjustment appointment, as the wire is changed to keep things progressing. This typically settles within 48 to 72 hours.
It’s worth saying: genuine toothache is actually quite rare. Most patients describe it as more of a dull pressure than pain – a noticeable feeling that’s easy to manage.
There are a few simple things that help if you’re feeling uncomfortable after an appointment:
Most people adjust to eating with braces within the first week or two. The main things to avoid are very hard or sticky foods – things like hard sweets, toffees, crusty baguettes and raw carrots – as these can dislodge brackets or bend wires and lead to an unplanned appointment.
If you’re having treatment with aligners, eating becomes much simpler – you remove them at mealtimes, eat as normal, clean your teeth and pop them back in.
Keeping your teeth clean is especially important when you’re wearing fixed braces. Brackets and wires create extra nooks where plaque can build up, so it’s worth adding an interdental brush to your routine alongside your regular toothbrush. Our team will guide you on the best approach.
The good news is that with the right care, most patients sail through treatment without any issues. And the discomfort, when it does appear, is usually short-lived.
Any mild discomfort during treatment is temporary. The result – a straighter, healthier smile that you feel confident in – lasts a lifetime. Our patients tell us it was absolutely worth it.
